Meet Nancy Malfanti

Up till now, the Journeys of Aunty Jo Jo has largely focussed on the places, experiences, food and shopping that I've enjoyed on my travels. An area which hasn't been given enough prominence are the people whom I've had the privilege of befriending along the way. Hence, an introduction of a new feature entitled "Along the Way" where I'll be sharing encounters with wonderful people I've met.

One of the most interesting people who has claimed a special place in my heart is Nancy Malfanti.

Nancy and I become the unlikeliest of friends when we lived in the an apartment complex in Belmont Avenue in Wollstonecraft. What would a 30 year old Malaysian corporate road warrior have in common with an elderly Australian retired kindergarten teacher? A lot more than you think!

What impressed me most about Nancy was her hunger for knowledge! She is an avid subscriber to correspondence courses from the "University of the Third Age" and in one of our first conversations, she completely blew me away with her knowledge of DNA coding and genetic engineering! She also took courses in Art History, Geography and Literature.

We developed a special bond over the garden in our complex since Nancy was solely responsible for ensuring we had the loveliest blooms throughout the year. The gorgeous baby blue and peacock blue hydrangeas that greeted us each spring were a product of Nancy's hard work throughout the year.

Our friendship grew steadily as I often volunteered to take her out for a drive to the North Coast (around Palm Beach) where she grew up or to the Southern Highlands for a cup of tea. I learnt so much about her life, her marriage and her aches and pains. But the most important thing I learnt from Nancy is that we must never stop learning.

Published in Expat Living

Five years after starting this blog to channel my writing energy, I've finally been published in a Singapore magazine! Expat Living picked two of my travel stories, on Angkor and Xian, to feature in their Annual Travel Guide for 2011. This is so exciting!

Here's to the start of an award-winning, best-selling career as an author ;-)

Girls' Day Out at Universal Studios

My sister, Julie, is on her biannual visit from the US and we've been exploring the latest sights around Singapore. Yesterday, we headed out to Universal Studios at Resorts World Sentosa on a hot, humid day and had a thoroughly enjoyable girls day out. Thanks Amanda for arranging the discounted tickets!

The obligatory tourist shots of Universal Studios logo and Hollywood Mainstreet

We stopped at Mel's Diner for a cheeseburger lunch before moving on to the following sights:-
  • Steven Spielberg's soundstage - Lights! Camera! Action - which simulated a Category 5 storm (very cool effects!)
  • Spinning teacups
  • The Mummy roller coaster ride (Never again!)
  • Donkey Night Club Show
  • 4-D Shrek Show

Just outside Jurassic Park

Some friendly advice for all those heading for this theme park...
  • Pack a hat, lots of sunblock lotion, gallons of drinking water
  • Stay in the shade as much as you can
  • Don't go on the Mummy roller coaster ride after having cheeseburger and fries for lunch. It's not a pretty sight :-)

Shrek Land - check out their version for Versace...hahaha!

Backwaters of Penang

On the second day of Chinese New Year, in the last few years, my family heads to Gertak Sanggul, which is located on the southeastern tip of Penang island. It is the home of Ah Huat, my cousin who is also my god-brother. He makes it a point to return from Kelantan with his family to celebrate CNY with the entire clan.

Before dinner, I will always make a trip down to the beach and walk along the weather-beaten jetty to enjoy the glorious sunsets.

Cal Mex @ Aunty Jo Jo's

My sister lives in California, and while it means I often miss Julie's company, it's a bummer because I miss her food too! She inherited all the Peranakan genes and is a superb cook. Which is why I'm so thrilled that she's back for a visit this Chinese New Year.

I wanted to make sure that my Singapore "family" also got a chance to savour Julie's cooking so the Chang family was invited to dinner tonight. To give the boys a taste of something different, Julie prepared a Cal-Mex meal of tacos and fajitas, with ingredients specially flown in from California. Judging by the way Justin licked the entire bowl of cheese sauce clean, I'd say dinner was a hit!
